PCS-221S Merging Unit
  • PCS-221S Merging Unit (MU) is used to receive AC analog values and transmit the Sampled Values (SVs) to protection devices, Bay Control Units (BCUs) or electricity meters through optical communication channels based on the IEC 61850-9-2 protocol and IEC61869-9 protocol. PCS-221S provides 2 methods to receive AC analog values: to sample AC analog values directly as a Stand-Alone Merging Unit (SAMU), or to receive digital sampling data from Low-Power Instrument Transformer (LPIT) via optical fiber. LPIT is also known as NCIT (Non-Conventional Instrument Transformer) or ECVT (Electronic Current & Voltage Transformer). 

    The PCS-221S can also be used to control primary switching equipment, i.e.: Circuit Breaker (CB), Disconnector Switch (DS), Earthing Switch (ES) in digital substations of all voltage levels. It supports real-time GOOSE communication, and can realize tripping and closing of CB/DS/ES via protection devices and BCUs. It can acquire binary input signals of primary equipment (CB/DS/ES) at the same time. It can meet the requirements of GOOSE tripping by point-to-point mode or network mode.

    • Locally samples the AC analog values or receives digital sampling data from electronic LPIT, synchronizes these values, and then transmits these sampled values to the protection devices or the BCUs.

    • For PCS-221S of case size 6U, 1/3 × 19", up to 1 AC analog input module can be provided.

    • For PCS-221S of case size 6U, 1/2 × 19" or 6U, 1/1 × 19", up to 2 AC analog input modules can be provided.


    • IRIG-B: IRIG-B via optical fiber interface

    • PPS: Pulse per second (PPS) via optical fiber interface

    • IEEE 1588: Clock message based on IEEE 1588 via optical fiber interface

    • SNTP: Unicast (point-to-point) & broadcast SNTP mode via Ethernet network


    • Support of various protocols

    • IEC 61850 ed1 & ed2, IEC 61850-8-1 (GOOSE), IEC 61850-9-2 (SV), IEC 62439 Parallel Redundancy Protocol, IEC 62439 HSR Ring Redundancy Protocol, IEC 61869-9 Protocol

    • Four 100Base-FX optical Ethernet ports

    • One ST port for clock synchronization, supporting IRIG-B, PPS

    • RJ45 debugging ports for both front and rear sides


    • Double point status synthesis

    • For PCS-221S of case size 6U, 1/3 × 19", if the pin-ferrule terminals are adopted, up to 41 binary inputs, or up to 22 binary outputs can be provided. If the ring-ferrule terminals are adopted, up to 34 binary inputs, or up to 18 binary outputs can be provided.

    • For PCS-221S of case size 6U, 1/2 × 19", if the pin-ferrule terminals are adopted, up to 105 binary inputs, or up to 56 binary outputs can be provided. If the ring-ferrule terminals are adopted, up to 84 binary inputs, or up to 44 binary outputs can be provided.

    • For PCS-221S of case size 6U, 1/1 × 19", if the pin-ferrule terminals are adopted, up to 329 binary inputs, or up to 175 binary outputs can be provided. If the ring-ferrule terminals are adopted, up to 259 binary inputs, or up to 135 binary outputs can be provided.


    • If the merging unit cooperates with conventional CT/VT or electronic LPIT, this device can synchronize the input sampling signals, such as three-phase current and voltage.

    • Provides the angle adjustment interpolation method to synchronize the data sampling, which does not rely on the GPS signal, thus has higher reliability.


    • Receives tripping/closing signals from protection device via GOOSE message.

    • Receives GOOSE Binary Inputs (GBI) from BCU via GOOSE message.
