December 7, 2024, ± 600kV Brazil Itaipu phase I valve hall 4 converter valve renovation project was successfully put into operation, a one-time power delivery success. NR Electric undertook the main equipment design and supply work for this project.
Itaipu DC transmission project was completed in the 1980s, with a line length of about 800kM and a transmission capacity of 6,300MW. It is a benchmark project of ultra-high voltage and high capacity DC transmission, and has a landmark status in the history of DC transmission development in the world. This is the first time large-scale reconstruction and upgrading of Itaipu project since it was put into operation 40 years ago.
Phase I renovation needs to be completed within 12 months of the bipolar 1 valve hall 4 converter valves and valve control system design, production, testing, shipment and on-site renovation work. The new converter valves must utilize the original valve hall and valve tower foundation, and the new valve control system must be compatible with the original control and protection system interface.
After 40 years of operation, all kinds of drawings in the station are missing, hardware and software design is not clear, the design of the converter valve system is facing great challenges. NR Electric has repeatedly organized a team to go to site to carry out related work. According to the valve hall design and various types of primary equipment layout, NR Electric designed the “external support + internal suspension” all-new vertical valve tower. The size of the valve tower compressed by 30% compared with the typical structure, and the solution successfully overcame the size of the Itaipu valve tower limitations. Using the special mode of on-site development and testing, NR Electric completed the development of the valve control system, which successfully access to the original control and protection system The new converter valve system realized the collaboration with “40-year-old” control and protection system, make the old DC transmission system to continue the “new life”.
The original control and protection equipment belongs to the operation equipment under the control of the owner, so the project team closely discussed the access program and test details with the owner, and carried out program verification in advance according to the owner's operation and maintenance plan, and all the access test items were passed in one go.
The project manager said, “The quality of the converter valve and valve control products developed by NR Electric is reliable, convenient for operation and maintenance, and the in-plant test capability has also reached the international leading level.” Itaipu renovation project phase I converter valve and valve control system smooth operation, is a one more successful practice of NR in high-voltage DC power transmission renovation project.
