On May 10, 2024, the world's first set of Static Self-Synchronous Compensator (SSC: Static Self- Synchronous Compensator, hereinafter referred to as “SSC”), supplied by NR Electric, successfully completed the artificial short-circuit test at the site of Huaneng Bamian wind farm project in Jilin.
SSC is a new type of grid voltage and frequency support equipment based on grid-forming control technology, composed of supercapacitor and high-voltage power electronic converter, which has the advantages of high inertia, high damping, strong support, low loss and easy operation and maintenance. SSC has the characteristics of self-synchronous voltage source, which can build up the potential necessary for the stable operation of the power system in the stages before, during and after the disturbance, and play the role of “pillar” for the stability of the power grid. By providing inertia and voltage support to the system, SSC can improve the system short-circuit capacity and short-circuit ratio, and can effectively solve the renewable energy dominated power system's transient low-voltage and over-voltage, wide-frequency oscillations and other problems.
This 35kV/50MVar SSC project is designed to have a usable energy of more than 200MJ and a short-term overload capacity of 3 times the rated current. The SSC shows excellent performance in this test, responding to the phase and amplitude changes at the connected point without delay, instantaneously outputting a large amount of active and reactive power to support the frequency and voltage of the system. It realized three times the current output during the fault period, which meets the expected requirements. This fault test for SSC shows similar reactive power response characteristics, inertia response characteristics and dynamic damping characteristics as synchronous condenser.
