NR assisted the successful grid connection of the first large-scale grid-forming energy storage power station in China

On December 31, 2022, the 50MW/100MWh Gaoqiao Energy Storage Power Station in Jingmen, Hubei Province, was successfully connected to the grid, marking the commercial operation of the first large-scale grid-forming energy storage power station in China. The successful grid connection of Gaoqiao Energy Storage Power Station effectively solves the risks brought by the high proportion of renewable energy access and power electronic devices in the region, and supports the stable operation of the power grid.


The construction scale of Gaoqiao Energy Storage Power Station is 50MW/100MWh, located next to the 110kV substation in Gaoqiao, Jingmen City. The core control equipment of the energy storage system, Power Conversion System(PCS), Energy Management System(EMS), Power Management System(PMS), and related secondary protection & control of the power station, are provided by NR in a complete set. The system included 16 sets of 3.15MW PCS, which are connected to the grid side by 8 circuit power collection lines.


Hubei power grid is the starting point of the Three Gorges power transmission, the channel for the transmission of electricity from the west to the east, the hub for mutual supply from the north to the south, and the center of national networking. By 2025, the proportion of photovoltaic and wind power new energy in the total installed capacity will exceed 30%.

Renewable energy power generation has strong volatility, poor regulation ability, and weak transient support. The construction of large-scale renewable energy access and HVDC transmission has made the trend of high percentage power electronic equipment of the main and distribution networks. The interaction between the power grid and power electronic equipment, as well as between power electronic equipment, has made the power grid no longer an ideal voltage source. The low inertia problem has changed the voltage and frequency characteristics of the system. These two variables pose great challenges to the safe and stable operation of the power grid.

The NR grid-forming energy storage system has all the functions of conventional energy storage, such as peak to valley translation of electricity, smoothing of external characteristics of renewable energy, and power backup. It also achieves power self-synchronization control through controlling the amplitude and phase angle of internal potential, presenting voltage source characteristics, achieving local fast primary frequency modulation, rotational inertia, and other multiple time scale control functions. It can also provide fast dynamic reactive compensation, and enhance the supporting role of renewable energy power stations on the grid, improve the grid friendliness of renewable energy sources. The Gaoqiao Energy Storage Power Station adopts the above grid-formingenergy storage technology to achieve joint control and independent regulation of the grid side energy storage for transient and steady state. At the same time, it also has a transient overload capacity of 1.5 times/10S, the ability to independently support the grid and improve the stability of the regional grid, improve the local energy absorption capacity.

With the grid connection operation of Gaoqiao Energy Storage Power Station, NR's energy storage and grid connection equipment has exceeded 1GW in 2022. Among them, grid-forming type energy storage systems have been successively put into operation in Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangsu, and other places, reflecting the strong demand for grid-forming type energy storage technology in new power systems. The networking control technology of NR will provide strong technical support for the construction of a clean, low-carbon, safe, controllable, flexible, efficient, intelligent, friendly, open and interactive advance power system.
