On December 20, 2022, the No. 9 unit of Baihetan Hydropower Station of Three Gorges Corporation successfully passed the 72 hour test run and was officially put into commercial operation. So far, 16 units of Baihetan Hydropower Station have been put into operation for power generation, marking the full completion of this super project located on the Jinsha River.
Baihetan Hydropower Station has 16 hydraulic turbine generator units with the largest single unit capacity in the world at present, and its total installed capacity ranks second in the world, second only to the Three Gorges Hydropower Station. It is an important supporting project for China to implement the "power transmission from the west to the east", build a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient energy system, and an important part of the world's largest clean energy corridor. When all units are at full capacity, the annual power generation of Baihetan Hydropower Station is equivalent to 19.6 million tons of standard coal, which will reduce 51.6 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, will become an important part of the process of improving the energy structure of the Yangtze River Economic Belt. In addition to enabling the surrounding areas, the two ± 800kV UHV DC lines will also send tens of billions of kilowatt hours of clean power to Jiangsu, Zhejiang and other eastern regions with large demand for power resources.
As an important power supply point, Baihetan Hydropower Station has high requirements for the reliability, accuracy and standardization of protective equipment. In view of the special needs of the huge units of Baihetan Hydropower Station, NR has carried out multiple rounds of scheme discussions with Baihetan Power Plant, providing Baihetan Hydropower Station with a full set of unit protection, switch station protection, auxiliary power protection key equipment such as phase selection and closing device and protection information management system provide a solid guarantee for the smooth operation of the project.
During the project implementation, the mature and stable performance of NR PCS-900 series relay protection devices was highly recognized by all parties. The PCS-9830 phase selection and closing device effectively suppresses the excitation inrush current, solves the problem of large impact on the grid load when the giant hydraulic turbine unit is connected to the grid, and has won unanimous praise from users. With its outstanding performance in terms of equipment performance and service level. NR has once again won the honor of "excellent supplier" of Baihetan and Wudongde hydropower stations recognized by China Three Gorges Construction (Group) Co., Ltd.
In recent years, as a major relay protection secondary equipment supplier in China, NR has continuously deepened its cooperation with Three Gorges Corporation. Since 2012, NR has provided a full set of unit protection, switch station protection and protection information management systems for the Xiangjiaba Hydropower Station (with an installed capacity of 6.4 million kilowatts, the 11th in the world). In 2020, Wudongde Hydropower Station (with an installed capacity of 10.2 million kilowatts, ranking seventh in the world), and in 2021, Baihetan Hydropower Station (with an installed capacity of 16 million kilowatts, ranking second in the world), the company will continue to help the construction and implementation of large-scale hydropower projects in the Jinsha River basin with advanced technology, high-quality products and professional services, and help the Three Gorges Group build the largest clean energy base.
